The textile and tanning industries have a significant impact on the environment. In addition to the high consumption of water, these sectors are considered among the key ones responsible for water pollution worldwide
The textile and tanning industries use considerable volumes of water in their operations, for example to grow cotton, dye materials, process leather and skins. For this reason, the adoption of a responsible water stewardship and an efficient chemical management system is pivotal for the OTB Group.
In this context, the Group joined the ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) Foundation's Roadmap to Zero Programme and the Leather Working Group (LWG) to progressively involve its supply chain partners in the adoption of lower-impact practices in the wet processes and in the tanning processes.
The brands of the Group collaborate with their suppliers to promote the use of innovative techniques for garment treatment and finishing, aiming to reduce water consumption and minimize the use of chemicals. As for denim products, the implementation of innovative processes is supported, including nebulisation for washing systems, the use of synthetic stones instead of traditional pumice, laser finishing technology and ozone treatment to dye garments.
OTB brands are committed to phasing out hazardous chemicals from the entire product life cycle to protect the environment, factory workers and end consumers, in line with international regulations and the Group's environmental guidelines. In 2021, the Group joined the ZDHC (Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals) Foundation's Roadmap to Zero Programme to develop a water and chemical management strategy based on the leading industry standards for all suppliers that employ wet processes.
Moreover, since 2022, OTB has adopted a Restricted Substances List (RSL) & Product Safety Requirements (PSR) to regulate management of chemicals for all the companies in the Group. The document supplements the regulatory restrictions on chemicals used in manufacturing with more stringent requirements and standards, such as the latest guidelines of the ZDHC Manufacturing RSL and other standards to ensure product safety. Suppliers are required to subscribe to and sign the RSL as part of their onboarding process
